Bananas, the fruit I would always buy for my husband because he loves them, but we avoided for two years because we “believed” were bad for weight loss because they contained to much sugar, are now back on our daily food intake. I found by Stumbling, a page praising bananas! I thought I must read this and was amazed at all the good things about bananas that I never knew.
Yes, bananas have three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber, BUT these sugars in the banana “give an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.” (1) Thus the banana is a great snack for athletes, children, laborers and office workers because of the energy boost but also for the vitamins C, Bs, iron, potassium, and magnesium. This fruit also helps lower stress, boost brain power, offer relief from heartburn, ulcers, can relieve morning sickness by keeping the blood sugars level, help people trying to quit smoking, calm nerves, helps with depression and seasonal affective disorder and PMS.
This wonderful fruit is packed with so many assets. It has been shown in studies to help lower blood pressure and prevent strokes by 40%. The FDA has allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruits ability to lower the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. The high levels of potassium and low salt make it the perfect food for this. The potassium also promotes bone health. The iron helps with anemia.
Bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein the body converts to serotonin. Serotonin helps you relax, calms your nerves, improves your mood, and generally makes you feel happier.
I was most pleased that bananas help with heartburn. I am always looking for a natural way to help with my heartburn. The banana has a natural antacid affect and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.
This is a perfect food for older adults: constipation, blood pressure, strokes, heart disease, ulcers, heartburn, vision destroying disease, depression, anemia are all helped by this simple food. For those who want to quit smoking and those who have a hangover, the banana can also help your body recover from the nicotine withdrawal and with milk soothe and re-hydrate your system after drinking too much.
Not only is the inside fruit wonderful, so is the peel! It has been shown to help with mosquito bites, warts, and polishing your shoes! The inside of the peel can be rubbed on mosquito bites to help reduce the irritation and swelling. Placing the inside peel against the wart and taping has shown to be a natural alternative. And polishing your shoes!? Just rub the inside of the peel on your shoes and polish with a dry cloth.
With all these wonderful assets, the sugar in the banana is high, but be sure to look at all the other benefits it offers. Wow! What a fruit!
