The benefits of Brazil Nut oil are amazing.  Like other nut oils, the oil doesn’t need to be processed, it is wonderful for you inside and out in its pure form.

Brazil nuts are packed full of nutrients. Packed full of vitamin E, selenium, mono-unsaturated fat and manganese.  They have a high caloric count but all of those calories come from wonderful mono-unsaturated fat which reduces the bad cholesterol (LDL) and helps your heart to be healthy by boosting good cholesterol (HDL).  Up until now, Brazil Nut oil has been mainly used in lotions, cosmetics and body oils.  But you can find it in some grocery and health food stores for cooking. It has a sweet taste and can be used for salad dressing and light sauteing.

“Brazil nut oil, obtained from these nuts, has many traditional medicinal applications as emollient and massage therapy. It has clear yellow color with a pleasant, sweet smell and taste. Its emollient property helps to keep skin well protected from dryness. It has also been used in cooking, and as “carrier or base oil” in traditional medicines in aromatherapy, in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.”

Again, nature has provided us a wonderful resource but here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing Brazil nuts, their oil or products made with Brazil nuts.

Since Brazil nuts are edible, little scientific research has been conducted on the cosmetic uses of the oil. Income from the extraction of Brazil nut oil gives people in Brazil’s rural areas an alternative livelihood that does not depend on destruction of the rainforest’s eco-system through logging. Several nonprofit organizations work with local communities to develop marketing and distribution options for Brazil nut oil products. The wild-harvested nuts also have good potential for sales in the organic products marketplace, but certification standards are often difficult to meet. Greenpeace notes that large international cosmetics companies can set prices that do not conform to established fair trade practices. Investigate the retailer’s and manufacturer’s fair trade policies before you buy Brazil nut skin care products.
